Whether your blood pressure is high, low, or normal depends on several
factors:
- The output from the heart.
- The resistance to blood flow
of the blood vessels
- The volume of blood, and
blood distribution to the various organs.
All these factors can be
affected by the activities of the nervous system and certain hormones.
If the blood pressure is
elevated the heart must work harder to pump an adequate amount of blood to all
the tissues of the body. This can lead to kidney failure, heart failure, and
stroke. In addition, high blood pressure is associated with coronary heart
disease, arteriosclerosis, kidney disorders obesity, diabetes, hyperthyroidism
and adrenal tumors. Blacks are more prone to having high blood pressure than
whites and men in general are more prone to have high blood than women.
A woman’s risk rises after
menopause, if she is taking oral contraceptives or if she is pregnant.
High blood pressure has no
symptoms until complications develop, for this reason it is known as a “silent
killer.” Some warning signs with advanced hypertension may shortness of breath,
rapid pulse, sweating, headache, rapid pulse, dizziness, and visual
disturbances.
Normal blood pressure for adults
may vary from 110/70 to 140/90, which is normal, while readings of 140/90 to
160/90 or 160\95 indicate borderline hypertension. Any pressure over 180/115 is
severely elevated.
