DO WE NEED A "TEN COMMANDMENTS COMMISSION?"

By Blossom Valleray

As we look at some of today's newspapers, we see headlines such as "Morality Tablets" and articles relating to "A Ten Commandments Commission". Why this sudden interest in the Ten Commandments, which are usually described as "The Old Jewish Law" or "The Law of Bondage"? I believe Christians find themselves confused about this sudden need to focus on the Ten Commandments. From the time we could remember, we heard it taught and preached that they were nailed to the cross with Jesus, and that Christians were no longer obligated to keep them.

I sincerely ask, what has happened, have the Ten Commandments been taken down from the cross, or are we finally admitting that they were never nailed there and are still what define sin for the Christians? We are told that the need for a Ten Commandments Commission arose in the spring of 2005, following the US Supreme Court rulings that the two-and-a-half ton monument of the Ten Commandments which was placed in the Alabama State court house by judge Roy Moore, was ordered to be removed. Under the heading "Morality Tablets" (in the Nassau Guardian, August 10, 2006), we read: "We believe that no civilized society or government can exist successfully without the recognition, acceptance, adherence and submission to an absolute authority. We also believe that absolute authority is the source of moral law and the standard of value judgment. Therefore the principle of freedom demands the protection of God's Moral Law. The Ten Commandments Commission is the response to that challenge and endeavors."

It is obvious that these advocates are referring to God's Moral Law, the Ten Commandments written in Exodus 20:1-17. For they call it the Ten Commandments and not the nine or eight commandments. I must sincerely ask, are we really serious about the Ten Commandments being God's absolute authority ? If so, what are we going to do with the Fourth Commandment which says: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the Seventh Day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it shalt thou not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested the Seventh Day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." Exodus 20:8-11.

If we are going to make the Ten Commandments God's "absolute authority" , what do we say to Christians who work on the Sabbath, Saturday, the Seventh Day of the week? If we look closely at the fourth commandment which was just quoted, God has used the word Seventh, twice: first He says that the Seventh Day is the Sabbath, and God rested the Seventh Day; and it is the only day blessed and hallowed by God.

The Church will never admit that it has thrown out the fourth commandment from the Ten. And in trying to appease God it has removed the word Seventh from the Commandment and replaced it with the word First. We are only lulling ourselves into a fatal deception which will be met with the wrath of God. "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience." Ephesians 5:6 (see also Romans 1:18).

It would be just as illogical for a Pagan to pick out every word in the Bible which has reference to the True God and then replace it with the name of his Pagan god. Wouldn't we all laugh? Well, that is exactly what the pagans do; they laugh at professed Christians who have replaced the Seventh Day Sabbath with Sunday the first day of the week, and who claim to be worshipping the God of heaven and earth. God has made it very clear that the Seventh Day Sabbath established at creation (Genesis 2:1-2) is what distinguishes Him from all other gods, even the pagan gods. Speaking of the Sabbath, God says: "It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the Seventh Day He rested, and was refreshed." Exodus 31:17.

This is where the task of "returning God to society" must begin, as stated in the Nassau Guardian, as one of the endeavors of the Ten Commandments Commission. God has promised  never to leave us or forsake us. So I believe that it is society that needs to return to God. And it will be demonstrated when men enter into God's true Sabbath rest. "There remaineth a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into His rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." Hebrews 4:9-11.

Men may cling to their traditions, and revere their customs and cherish hatred against those who seek to show them their error. Says Jesus: "Every plant that my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up." In place of the authority of the so-called fathers of the church, God bids us accept the Word of the Eternal Father, the Lord of heaven and earth. Here alone is Truth unmixed with error. David said: "I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy Testimonies are my meditation . I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts." Psalms 119:99-100. Let all who accept human authority, the customs of the church, or the traditions of the fathers, take heed to the warning conveyed in the Words of Christ: "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." Matthew 15:9.
